Dez Bryant meeting: Cowboys WR ‘getting myself together’ before talk with Jerry Jones

The long-awaited sitdown between Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and team owner Jerry Jones will take place Friday at the team’s facility, The Star, in Frisco, Texas. The NFL world is anticipating/wishing for a final decision on Bryant’s status with the team.

— The 29-year-old Bryant is due to make $12.5 million in 2018, and his cap number is $16.5 million. He’s coming off a 2017 season in which he had 69 receptions and six touchdowns but also a career-low 12.1-yard average. Speculation about him needing to accept a pay cut or face being released before organized team activities begin Monday have been steady throughout the offseason. Dallas radio station KRLD-FM this week reported on a possible parting.

The NFL world is ready for the speculation to end with the meeting at The Star.

The good news for the Seahawks as they look over their schedule for 2018: Most of their toughest opponents have to travel to Seattle. And one of their “away” opponents in 2018, the Raiders, will meet them in London for an October showdown. Neither West Coast team will be happy about that haul.

Below is a breakdown of the Seahawks’ schedule in 2018. Seattle’s regular-season schedule, including dates and kickoff times, will be posted after it is made available by the NFL.

Toughest tests: The Cowboys, armed again with running back Ezekiel Elliott for a full season and a further developed QB in Dak Prescott, present the Seahawks a tough intraconference matchup, even though Dallas will have to travel to Seattle. The Seahawks also have to travel all the way to London for their October matchup against the Raiders.

Who those quarterbacks will be remains to be seen, but there are good odds Sam Darnold could see the field for the Browns, but if it is Josh Allen like many pundits keep suggesting, that would be must-watch TV as well.seahawks_125

Rams GM: Aaron Donald ‘on the verge’ of becoming top-paid defensive player

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is the reigning defensive player of the year, and as he’s heading into his final year of his rookie contract, it appears he could be headed for a big payday.

In an appearance on The MMQB Podcast with Peter King, Rams general manager Les Snead referred to Donald as “someone who is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid defensive player in football.”

Keenum is much richer today with his Denver deal than he was in 2016, but it hardly seems fair that he should have to ponder the possibility of once again being the stopgap starter until a hotshot rookie is ready to play. Especially after leading the Vikings to the NFC title game last season; he was 12-4 as the starter, not including a victory in relief of Sam Bradford in Chicago, and ranked seventh in the league in QB rating (98.3) with 3,547 passing yards, a 67.6 percent completion rate, 22 TD passes and just seven interceptions. He was the NFC Offensive Player of the Month in November.

Shazier stood to greet the PPG Paints Arena audience before leading a “let’s go Pens” chant, which got the building roaring with excitement.

Shazier, 25, continues to rehab from a serious spinal injury suffered in a Dec. 4 game against the Bengals that required spinal stabilization surgery and left him in a wheelchair. Still, the two-time Pro Bowl player has attended various sporting events and was captured on video doing pull-ups at the gym.

Although he won’t play in 2018, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert confirmed there will be some sort of designation for Shazier so he can still remain a part of the team next season.

This might lead some old-school Packers to groan about Terrell Buckley, but James should be available at No. 14. Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick or Ohio State’s Denzel Ward would be options if available, too.seahawks_015

Harold Landry to Lions in CBS Sports’ latest mock draft

Boston College defensive end Harold Landry is the Detroit Lions’ first-round pick, at No. 20, in CBS Sports’ latest mock draft, published Monday.

“This pick can be viewed as insurance for the Lions if they can’t extend Ziggy Ansah, and Landry doesn’t have to be the team’s alpha pass-rusher in his rookie campaign,” says CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso.

Luck was the highest-regarded prospect of this generation, so it’s no surprise he received every first-place vote from the queried scouts. Among the guys who didn’t make it to the top five were Kirk Cousins (13 points), Russell Wilson (6) and Nick Foles (1). McGinn himself ranked Osweiler over Wilson, with one scout saying Osweiler was “like the CEO of a company.” That’s another roundabout way of saying someone’s tall. Many were concerned about the 5-foot-11 Wilson’s ability to throw from the pocket, but the only thing that’s prevented him from doing so as a pro has been the Seahawks’ offensive line.

The scouts rightly thought this was a dismal quarterback class, although it’s clear to see the difference between the consensus and what actually happened on draft day. While most of the league preferred Smith, the Bills were one of the exceptions and took Manuel with the 16th pick. The Florida State passer was the only quarterback taken in the first round.

And then they all walked back to their dugouts. Womp, womp.

It started when Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt and Yankees designated hitter Tyler Austin got into an argument at second base.

Tyler Wade tried bunting for a base hit down the third base line. But Rafael Devers fielded it and whipped the ball to Holt at second base.

The throw was in plenty of time and Holt positioned himself with one foot on the back of the base.

When he caught the ball, Austin slid in hard and on Holt’s side of the base, sticking out his left foot. Austin clearly intended to go after Holt’s leg. It wasn’t clear if Austin’s spiked caught Holt.

Immediately, the pair jumped into each other’s faces. Then the benches and bullpens cleared.

When the sides parted, the Red Sox challenged the call for slide interference.la_kings_015
